Featured Artist of the Week – 80 Proof Band

When 80 Proof hit the Texas Country Music Circuit in 2003, they operated off one standard; Good Music makes Good Fans. This standard holds true today and everyday. The 80 Proof Band is made up of very diverse singer/songwriters who all come from different backgrounds in music. They easily blend the popular styles to come up with one distinct and different sound. It’s very easy to get lost in the melodies of such ballads as “Crazy Dreams” and “December Rain”, and then to rock out to the sounds of “Throw Away the Key” and “I’m Alright”. 80 Proof‘s shows consist of many original songs, which the band has written and composed, mixed with covers strategically placed to get and keep the attention of the crowd. The showmanship of the 80 Proof Band gets better all the time. By mixing high energy, lots of great original songs, and great cover songs, the band has the opportunity to draw a crowd and leave that crowd wanting more. Some of the Bars, Clubs, and Dancehalls and Others that We have Played: The Aardvark in Ft. Worth, The Saloon in Comanche, Bostocks in Stephenville, The Ranch in Midland, Blue Light Live in Lubbock, Dos Amigos in Odessa, Backroads Bar and Grill in Brownwood, The Library in San Angelo, The Scrub Pub in San Angelo, Blaine’s Pub in San Angelo, The White Elephant in Ft. Worth, Love and War in Texas in Plano, Flat Rock Park and Lake haven in Lake Brownwood, the third, fourth, and fifth annual Brownwood Reunion Celebration in Brownwood, Melody Oaks Ranch in Priddy and many other venues across the state of Texas.

TRD: Who do you consider your influences?

80: We have so many influences; they range from Willie, Waylon, and Johnny Cash to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Stoney LaRue, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Reckless Kelly. We all come from Different backgrounds in music, so we like to take all the music that has shaped us in one way or another and blend it all into one. At the end of the day, our friends, fans, and family are some of our biggest influences.

TRD: What was your first Gig?

80: We played our first gig in the summer of 2003 at Bostocks in Stephenville, TX opening for a band that a friend of ours was in and then headed to Brownwood, TX to play in the Brownwood Reunion on the next night. It was a crazy 2 gig first weekend that we will never forget.

TRD: What groups or singers do you listen to now?

80: Currently, and in regular rotation in our Van, We have been listening to Reckless Kelly Was Here, Stoney LaRue Live at Billy Bob’s and the Red Dirt Album, Cross Canadian Ragweed Back to Tulsa, various Stevie Ray Vaughan CD’s, and a whole bunch of other random stuff that we can fit on our traveling Zune.

TRD: What is your favorite venue you have performed at? Why?

80: Dos Amigos in Odessa, They treat us great there and we have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with many top artists there. It makes it so much more fun and interesting when we can play in front of a whole lot of people instead of just our Merch Guy getting drunk in the back. LOL

TRD: If you could perform only 1 more show, anywhere in the world, where
would you want to play? Why?

80: The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo… It just sounds fun.

TRD: What is your favorite song you have recorded? Why?

80: Any of the songs on our new CD. We worked so hard on this new one, that we can be happy to say that they are ours and we are proud of them. So….. Everyone go pick up a copy of Tuesdays at 7 when it hits stores.

TRD: When you’re not performing what do you like to do with your spare time?

80: We spend a lot time with the people that surround us and we like to fish, cook out, float the river, and check out other live shows.

TRD: If you could perform with any other artist, who would you like to
share the stage with? Why?

80: Well, as a band we would be really pumped to share the stage with Cross Canadian Ragweed. We have all been listening to them since we were in High School and I can remember the day that someone brought the Carney CD and 377 to school. We were just blown away by their sound and spent a lot of time going to see them when they were playing close to our hometowns.
